Hesiod's Story, just an Ode...

"Gaia, the beautiful, rose up,
Broad blossomed, she that is the steadfast base
Of all things. And fair Gaia first bore
The starry Heaven, equal to herself,
To cover her on all sides and to be
A home forever for the blessed Gods."

Demeter and Persephone

"The Return of Persephone by Frederic Leighton, (1891).
The central myth of Demeter, which is at the heart of the Eleusinian Mysteries, is her relationship with Persephone, her daughter. In the Olympian pantheon, Persephone became the consort of Hades (Roman Pluto, the underworld god). Demeter had a large scope of abilities. Besides being the goddess of the harvest, she also controlled the seasons, and because of that she was capable of destroying all life on earth. In fact, her powers were able to influence Zeus into making Hades bring her daughter Persephone up from the underworld. Persephone became the goddess of the underworld when Hades abducted her from the earth and brought her into the underworld. She had been picking flowers, when a great chasm opened up behind her and Hades rode out in a chariot and took her, bringing her with him back down into the Underworld. Life came to a standstill as the depressed Demeter searched for her lost daughter, wandering the Earth night and day." (from wikipedia)

Mother of Pearl

I have been drawn to Mother of Pearl lately.

Mother of Pearl bestows the feeling that you are resting in the arms of a loving mother. Thus, Mother of Pearl helps those who need some motherly love, whether or not they are aware of that need. At the same time, it brings the security of knowing that the Mother within is always in your heart, ready to give you all the love, support, and comfort you need.

Mother of Pearl stirs and awakens the primordial memory of your origin in the infinite ocean of divine love. It stirs this memory in your thoughts, your feelings, and in every cell of your physical body. As your memory opens, this divine love flows into you, repairing the deep wounds created by unfulfilled needs. Mother of Pearl's energy sings the song of motherly love as it imparts the feeling of being cradled in a loving mother's arms.

In your physical body, Mother of Pearl produces an overall calming effect as it gently stirs the life energy of your cells. Like waves lapping the shore, this stirring is steady, relaxing, and rhythmical. Overactive mechanisms throughout your body are calmed, and the flexibility of your cells increases, improving their ability to accept oxygen and life force.

Durgha, unleash my power and fire!

O Mother Durga!
Enter our bodies in Thy Yogic strength.
We shall become Thy instruments,
Thy sword slaying all evil,
Thy lamp dispelling all ignorance.
Fulfill this yearning of Thy passions,
O Mother!
Be the master and drive the instrument,
Wield Thy sword and slay the evil,
Hold up the lamp and spread the light of knowledge.
Make Thyself manifest.

Hidden Faces

An curious bird perched by a man on a park bench who was watching the sky for birds.
He did not notice his feathered friend beside him singing.
The bird flew away.
Not long after a beautiful woman with locks of hair like golden straw came and sat beside the man.
She spoke in her voice like song " what are you looking for my friend?"
"I seek the great owl of wisdom lady," he said
"I asked for him to come enlighten me," he did not look at her.
"I see." replied the woman
"And what will you do when this wisdom is bestowed upon you from the heavans?" Asked the woman graciously.
"I will look no further. I will look no longer. I will bask in knowingness and be in peacful content forever.
That is what I'll do! That's what I'll do the day that wisdom arrives." He exclaimed still not taking his eyes off the never ending blue above him.
A silent moment passed. Side by side they sat in stillness, until the man couldn't take it any longer.
"Do you mind?" he asked. "I hate to be this forward, but you are kind of distracting me; I would hate to miss the passing owl on account of you..."
"Oh right." Said the Lady as she briskly rose from the park bench. "Well, good luck" she said as she walked away, undisturbed and humming a merry song.
She wandered back over the garden bridge.
Pausing for a moment at the arches peak to admire the rushing stream below.
Then glancing back at the man for a brief moment who was still intently starring at the empty sky,

She inhaled deeply spreading her brilliant wings
And flew away.
Shaking her head.
Away from the man.
The man who sought her.
The man who never saw her...

Wearing Pearls of Wisdom

I am a beautiful sea creature
Collecting pearls to share with another land.
A land unknown to the deep blue seas
But all the same a part of it.
Near the ocean's edge
A wise owl waits to honor my collection
Soaring high the owl sprinkles my pearls
Over the lands unknown to sea creatures
The beads clink on roof tops all around the world
Just like magic hail...

Layering the earth with the purity of a virgin bride
In her wedding dress,
On her wedding day,
The earth is decorated with pearls of wisdom
Reflecting light like the sun
In every direction, but down.

For a Friend Whom I Miss (you know who you are)

Coffee With Milk

It is very deep to have a cup of tea
ALso coffee in a white cup
with milk
a hand to go around the cup
and a mouth to open and take it in
It is very deep and very good to have a heart
Do not take the heart for granted
it fills with blood and lets blood out

Good to have this chair to sit in
with these feet on the floor
while I drink this coffee
in a white cup
To have the air around us to be in
To fill our lungs and empty them like weeping
this roof to house us
the sky to house the roof in endless blue
To be in the midwest
with the Atlantic over there
and the Pacific on our other side

It is good this cup of coffee
the milk in it
the cows who gave us this milk
this
simple as a long piece of grass

Into this World

Let us die gracefully into this world
like a leaf pressed in stone
let us go quietly breathing our last breath
let the sun continue to revolve in its great golden dance
let us leave it be as it is
and not hold on
not even to the moon
tipped as it will be tonight
and beckoning wildly in the sea

-- Natalie Goldberg

Earth is Calling

The land has been calling me lately. Mother earth has entered my radar in a powerful way recently. I am very drawn to nature lately. I always have been, but it's calling me home. As May approaches with new light I ponder the parts of my soul that need to go outside to bask in sunshine. I am gathering the pieces of my soul this month and sifting through the dark to gather the old and give it back to the mother. This month is about receiving and allowing myself to receive. I am clearing space inside and out. I am feeling called to be outside. I am excited to learn, to grow, to make myself more myself.... I am feeling a lot of opportunity arriving at my doorstep and life is looking bright, brimful of possibilities. Today I picked the Goddess Cordelia. She says to me "go outside." My words exactly. I am preparing for the sunlight that is waiting to dissolve the skies tears that have saturated our souls this winter. We are emerging from a shell and shedding our old skin like a snake. And like the snake we are changing because gaia is calling us home and some of us are able to hear her. I'm on my way. Hold on ....

Goddess Cordelia:
Magickal Attributes = Blessings, Prayer, Beauty, Fairy, Wishes
Symbols = Flowers and Water
A British nature goddess, Cordelia is part of every spring and summer flower that blossoms. This is the beauty she brings to us. She only appears in May so if you need her aid get with it. May 26, is a special time to wish in a wishing well to draw attention of Cordelia and her companions, the fey, into your life. Take a small chair dress it up with thyme, straw primrose, oak leaves, ash leaves or any other kind of leaf. Place a plant on the chair and leave it in a window sill, to encourage fairy guests, who will bring all manner of spring folic to your home and garden.
